Ann-Elizabeth Barnes

In 2001 Ann-Elizabeth Barnes discovered a book by Lillian Price in the Ashley House archives entitled, Sheffield, Frontier Town. In it she read a mention about the enslaved “Mumbet” and her suit for freedom. This discovery of Elizabeth “Mumbet” Freeman’s existence and actions spurred Barnes to do research and program development on Elizabeth Freeman’s life and impact. She and Jana Laiz co-authored the book about Freeman entitled, A Free Woman on God's Earth. Ann-Elizabeth Barnes has presented for many elementary schools, historical societies, and libraries in Berkshire County, NY State, Vermont and Connecticut.
